Munich, Germany 1942—Hans Scholl never intended to get his younger sister involved in an underground resistance. When Sophie Scholl finds out, she insists on joining Hans and his close friends in writing and distributing anti-Nazi leaflets entitled, The White Rose. The young university students call out to the German people, begging them to not allow their consciences to become dormant, but to resist their tyrannical leader and corrupt government. Hans knows the consequences for their actions—execution for committing high treason—but firm in his convictions, he’s prepared to lose his life for a righteous cause. Based on a true story, Hans, Sophie and all the members of The White Rose resistance will forever inspire and challenge us to do what is right in the midst of overwhelming evil.
Resist eBook Emily Ann Putzke
I would describe this as a wonderful book for young readers, especially as it is highly romanticised regarding the relationship between Hans Scholl and Gisela Schertling. The reality of course was rather different as Gisela Schertling claimed in her interrogation, that Hans Scholl was abusive to her. However, the love story element is sweet and it underpins the life sacrifice that was made by these young people. A European reader, like myself, disliked the Americanisms and use of modern-day slang in the story, for instance, universities were never referred to as "schools" and hot beverages (especially coffee and tea ) were never drank out of mugs. On the whole, this young author has done a terrific job of creating a sensitively written novel about The White Rose Group for young readers.Product details

Resist eBook Emily Ann Putzke Reviews
Emily took the lives of Hans and Sophie Scholl and brought them to life in a beautiful, realistic manner that pulls the reader into their terrifying world of Nazi Germany. This is not at all a light read; be prepared to cry. )
Plot/Storyline 4/5
Since Resist is about real people’s lives, there wasn’t much of a “typical” plotline. However, it wasn’t needed, as the lives of the Scholl’s and their friends was exciting enough without a typical fiction plot.
Characters 4/5
I felt like some of the characters were a bit vague and could have been built upon. It was far from horrible, though.
Writing 5/5
Emily’s writing is always amazing, and this book was no exception.
Dialogue 5/5
Beautifully done.
Want-to-read-ability 4/5
Around the middle, the book got a little slow. This book couldn’t be described as a thrilling adventure, but is was very good. I learned a lot about WWII.
Warnings Some gory scenes of warfare and ghettos that might not be appropriate for younger readers. Also, mild language was present (three instances).
Overall, I enjoyed this book. Emily is an extremely talented writer and I can’t wait to see how her writing continues to grow with each book!
I feel handicapped in reviewing this book as I actually know very little about the White Rose, beyond having read some of their leaflets, Inge Scholl's brief book, and adoring the film Sophie Scholl The Final Days. So I can't tell you much about the extent to which this story has been fictionalised. From what I can tell, however, this story hews pretty close to the history in telling Hans Scholl's story through his own eyes. It's a gutwrenching, challenging, moving story, told with great passion and fidelity to the historical period. A couple touches I particularly liked the author's choice to interleave excerpts from the leaflets in with some very tense scenes, and the regular quotations from great German literature and poetry which helped to flesh out Hans as the scholar and thinker he must have been. (Also, some of that poetry was gorgeous).
I thought a tighter plot structure might have benefited the story, and that the writing could sometimes have flowed a little better. Overall, however, I thought this was a great introduction to the wonderful tragedy and heroism of the White Rose. It sucked me in, and kept me turning pages in suspense even though I knew how it ended. And it left me with a great determination to stand up, like the Scholls, for what I know to be right. 3.5 stars.
Freiheit!
A non-fiction writer can bring you quite close to a historical time period. But a good historical fiction writer can bring you all the way into the room. Emily Ann Putzke has done that with Resist. While reading Putzke’s vivid , accurate descriptions, I became closer to the Scholl’s story than I ever thought possible and found myself rooting all over again for these idealistic young Germans who thought they could topple the Nazi regime with their words.
I don’t normally read much historical fiction but because Putzke is an excellent writer and has also done her homework, one never gets the sense that she is trying to draw attention to her own writing, excellent though it is. Instead, she keeps all the attention on the Scholls and their friends.
I definitely recommend this marvelous book!
On aside, I really enjoyed the prose and poetry game played amongst the friends. This reading gets 4 stars from me - all things considered!
Such a powerful story of young people taking a stand for what they know is right against overwhelming odds-and sticking with it to the end! This book not only provides a thrilling page turner story, but actually inspires and convicts readers to take courage and work to resist and counter injustice in our world today in whatever form it may take. Highly recommended!
This book tells an amazing true story, and not only that but it is written well, too. Captivating, intriguing, and tear jerking.
