She is terrified of this world and hates what’s she’s become. The inhabitants of this world fear her because of the world she came from and her transformation into a new species. Both fear and loathe each other but their survival is dependent on their embracing each other.
Patience’s transformation will not only save herself but be the salvation for all who once feared her.

A good friend of mine told me I had to read this book because I'd love it, and I'm glad she did! I brought it from my local bookstore, and I have to say that I am glad she asked me! Since I have not read a book in this genre before, it was a very, very pleasant surprise!
I don't want to give too much of the story away, but this is a rich fantasy-adventure novel where an everyday African American teenager named Patience has to transform in order to visit Mbaba, which is a fascinating, dynamic, mysterious world existing on the family plantation. She is terrified when she discovers she must save not just herself but the whole world and her family. But she hates what she is turned into and also her "real life", making this more than just the usual "hero saves the world" book. I found lots of great lessons on love and spiritualty in these pages, and I think it’s the sign of a good book that makes you stop and think about how YOU would react in a similar situation.
Personally, I couldn't stop reading this book, and it was difficult for me to put it down - what a page-turner! The book is an easy read and an engaging one too, which not just makes it enjoyable but also helps the message and morals that the author wants to get across.
Can we have book two now please Joy?
This story is unique in how the relationship between these two families is empowering. One family who are slave owners' end up gifting their plantation to slaves. That is the most unique take on a relationship between those kind of dynamics. This tale has beautiful elements of empowerment, love, faith and trust. I enjoyed the variety of colorful characters and Peterson writes with great detail to richly develop them. Her vivid dialogue with expression of emotions that take you into their thoughts and make you feel them deeply. Overall I found The Gatekeeper an engrossing, and a compelling read. I highly recommend it for all age groups.
Had the privilege to edit this book and it will keep you as engrossed as the Chronicles of Narnia did!
